car raid

On a Saturday morning, I sat inside a 2012 Toyota Camry with my childhood friend, Lucas Martins.

As I observed all of the contents of his car, I noticed that there was a bunch of cd's, a camera bag, and a guitar case in the trunk. "I've been playing guitar since I was around 10 years old," explains Martins. The 17 year old junior, who resides in Houston, is apart of a band called Sleepy Dog with his close friends.

Martins has also shown a passion in photography, which he learned to appreciate during his freshman year of high school. "I love being able to capture the moments that matter to me," he states. "messing around with photoshop is also really fun." He's gained a lot of his interests from his mom, who loves photography and making art.

As he shows me all of his cd's, he includes, "I grew up listening to bands like The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys, which really inspired me to start making my own music."

In addition, a Brazilian flag keychain sits inside one of his cup holders. Martins was born in the city of Sao Paulo, but moved to Dallas when he was only 3 years old. "I travel to Brazil once every few years," He comments. "I love being bilingual. It has so many advantages!"

When I glanced at the floor of the car, I stumbled upon an opened acceptance letter from UNT. "UNT has a great radio, television, and film program that I'm really interested in," Martins states. "I'm so ready to leave high school."

He plans to continue with his band during college and play at more venues. "I really wanna play at sxsw next year," he says. He describes his genre as indie surf / garage rock. Aside from guitar, he plays bass and a little bit of drums.
