three advantages of a raw file:

  1. higher in dynamic range
  2. gives you much more control with editing
  3. easier to fix white balance

disadvantage:
not suitable for printing directly

three advantages of a jpeg file:
  1. sharper
  2. higher in contrast
  3. immediately suitable sharing on web, printing

disadvantage:
some color and resolution becomes lost

1. It retains all of the information, and it preserves all of the pixels.
2. You have control over white balance, saturation, contrast, and highlights.
3. raw files are much bigger than jpegs, so your memory card will run out of space much quicker. Also, you can't convert jpegs into raw images.
4. They would need to know how to work with raw files because it gives them the opportunity for better editing options.

1. I've only used jpeg and gif.
2. vector formats have a geometric description which can be rendered while raster images just describes the characteristics of each individual pixel.

.jpeg is lossy, a common use is to store and transmit photos, and you can create this type of file in your camera

.tiff is lossless, a common use is to print an image, and you can't create this type of file 

.psd is lossless, a common use is to edit an image, and you can't create it

.dng is lossy, a common use is to save space for your camera, and you can
